"10 Women~10 Nations"
Well-known and highly celebrated First Nations women in the arts,
Hollie Bear Bartlett (Haisla), Danielle Hendry (Haida), Anastasia Hendry (Haida), Mary Jane Joe (Ntle'kepmx-Interior Salish), Carrie Matilpi, Laara Mixon (Haida), Christine MacKenzie (Kwakiutl Nation), Shelley MacDonald's Girlz group, Bernice Thompson (MicMac), Chrystal Sparrow (Musqueam Nation) and Tracy Williams (Squamish Nation) from diverse artistic disciplines share a common interest in culture, art, community and the advancement of Indigenous peoples. They exhibit their beautiful works of jewelry, wood carvings, leather works, copper, clothing, button blankets, drums, rattles, and wall art.

NORTHWEST COAST POUCH WORKSHOP
Saturday, March 6, 2010 ~ 1 pm-4 pm
Since ancient times people have worn or carried amulets in pouches for protection, courage, blessing, or guidance. This piece enhances a connection to the ancestors, be they genetic, intellectual, or spiritual. Join well-known Haida artist Anastasia Hendry as she teaches a special workshop making a Northwest Coast pouch made of felt with beads and appliqué. This class is designed for children and adults of all ages. All materials will be provided. Anastasia has worked for over ten years with many BC school districts. Working with children brings joy to Anastasia as she endeavours to share her culture and craft while breaking down stereotypes and misconceptions about First Nations and their art.
FEE: $30 per participant

"Canadian Tapestry"
Masako Araki's pastels fill us all with so much wonderful richness and texture, capturing all the exquisite colours of the seasons. Pastel artwork is created by stroking the sticks of dry pigment across an abrasive ground, embedding the color in the "tooth" of the paper, sandboard, and/or canvas. Pastel paintings reflect light like a prism. No other medium has the same color power. Masako has enriched the art world with this beautiful medium.

UKRAINIAN EASTER EGG WORKSHOP
Saturday, March 27, 2010~11 am-4 pm
Workshop fee: $20 per student
Material fee: $30 per student

(this includes the cost of the dyes, wax, writing styluses, eggs, paper towels, cleaning wires, jars, etc )
Time: 11 am-4 pm (please bring a lunch)
Class size: Min. 12/ Max. 25
     
This one day workshop will focus on the traditional Ukrainian art of "writing" pysanky (decorating eggs using beeswax and dyes). Instructor Oksana Szulhan is a pysanky artist of Ukrainian heritage. She will explain the culture and history of pysanky and demonstrate the technique. Oksana also provides students with step-by-step instructions on how to design the eggs using the appropriate tools. Her workshops explore art through culture and history to promote cross-cultural understanding & self-exploration.
     
This one-day workshop is ideal for those who are beginners as well as those who are relatively new to the craft and may want to refresh their skills. Each participant will be able to decorate 4 eggs!

"You're the Song in my Art"
The closest bond in the family is the one that is shared by a mother and her daughter. Theirs is a bittersweet relationship, which goes through numerous ups and downs in life and in the end, still turns out to be the most intimate of all the other relations. Join us as we celebrate a special exhibition during Mother's Day, by mother and daughter artists Elodie Ellingsen acrylic artist from London, England and her mother long-time West Van artist Vange Brossard. They have both exhibited throughout Canada, the US, Mexico, Ireland and the UK.

"The Last Picture Show:Floral & Fantasy"
"This is my last hurrah - I won't do any more" says the graceful octogenarian and long time West Van artist Ruth Coxon Lewis. She started painting when her children were grown working mainly with oils, later discovering more joy and flexibility in watercolours. She has been juried into many prestigious galleries throughout the Pacific Northwest and is a member of the Federation of Canadian Artists and the North Shore Artist's Guild. Join her as she celebrates her 85th birthday with her latest artistic creations!

"All That Jazz"
Join artist Lori Bagneres for her first solo show at the Silk Purse. She graduated from L'Ecole Nationale des Beaux Arts de Grenoble, France in 1993. Her contemporary music-related works are influenced by the modernist tradition of European and American Abstraction. Her compositions reveal texture, fragmented words, partial images and frayed geometric forms that achieve contrast and atmospheric depth.
