'Trash No. 10'

Jeongmin Ahn

'Copper Sokeye, Copper River'

Wayne Buhler

'Blue Zone'

Monica Gewurz

Explore Art's role in the climate conversation. Featuring Jeongmin Ahn's hyper-realistic paintings of trash, Wayne Buhler's idealized nature paintings on copper & Monica Gewurz's abstract landscapes & seascapes painted with natural pigments.

Jeongmin Ahn is an emerging Korean hyperrealist painter based in Vancouver. His series Trash focuses on consumerism & the ecosystem. Hyperrealistic paintings require large amounts of time to render, & the great care & detail put into this work conflicts with the notion of his subject's disposability & lack of value. These detailed, life-like paintings allow viewers to look more carefully at the trash, to reassess how & what we place value on in a consumer society that readily fills up landfills & waters with items designed to be disposable

Wayne Buhler is a North Vancouver based artist of the Simpcw First Nation,  the 'People of the Rivers'. Having always lived close to nature, Buhler's art envisions a healthy & natural world. Bright images of natural beauty are captured in translucent oil paint on polished copper: rivers flow; sockeye salmon return; nature thrives. The luminescence of the burnished copper shines through the paint like hope while also enhancing the work's depth & richness of colour. Buhler's stylized scenes & abstractions offer viewers a glimpse of the world we could live in.

Monica Gewurz is a mixed media artist based in Lions Bay with a background in environmental science. Moving away from oil & acrylic paints due to their associated microplastics & toxicity, Gewruz is working in eco-friendly sustainable paint, plant-earth pigments, upcycled materials & even sand to create textured colourful works. Inspired by the emotional impact of a landscape or shoreline, these paintings remind us of the beauty of nature & our responsibility to take care of it.
