North Shore photographers Sanam Khani & Trevor Schmidt explore new ways of looking at the world around us through experimental techniques, challenging our perceptions of the natural world, asking us to reflect upon our own outlooks, philosophies & selves.
Sanam Khani's work captures reflections of the world around her in water & other surfaces. The photographs not only ask us to consider our relationship with the scenes depicted, but to also look inwards remind ourselves that who we are today is a reflection of our past & our given circumstances; our distinct variety of cultures are reflections of history & customs; & the current status of our planet is a consequence of its past & its encounters.
Trevor Schmidt is guided by the concept of camera as paintbrush. Schmidt views the colors, contrasts, shapes, shadows, & textures in the viewfinder as the palette to paint with — to brush, drag, spin, stretch, & transform into works of reverence to the unparalleled elegance of our natural world.
More than images of local scenery, Khani & Schmidt intend to transform landscape photography from purely representational into artistic interpretations & mediations upon the lands & waters around us & ultimately ourselves.
