We offer workshops for all levels of experience, from beginner to advanced; in a variety of subjects, from foundational techniques to exploratory methods & approaches; both online & in-person.

    Join us for a fun and creative workshop with watercolour artist Sonia Mocnik! Inspired by the beauty of local plants, Sonia will show you how to paint your own unique Oregon grape (Mahonia) leaf using watercolors and ink. 

    This workshop is open to all levels. Sonia will teach various techniques, including color mixing with a limited palette and other expressive painting methods like wet wash on dry, wet on wet, and negative space painting. You can choose to use templates to trace the subject or freehand draw, depending on your skill level.

    Limited spots available. 

    All the necessary supplies and materials will be provided. However, you are welcome to bring the following optional items:

    • Round 6 or 8 brush
    • 1/4" flat brush
    • Waterproof black fineliner pen
    • Optional white jelly roll pen
    • Watercolour paint colours: 
      • Alizarin Crimson, Permanent Rose, Quinacridone Rose; 
      • Ultramarine Blue; 
      • Phthalo Green (yellow shade) or Viridian
      • New Gamboge or Cadmium Yellow
    • Sketch pad 
    • pencil
    • Kneaded eraser
    • Towel or rag
    • Water container
    • Paper: Watercolour cardstock (140lb) or any cold or hot press watercolour paper





    Artist/Instructor Bio

    Sonia Mocnik, originally from Vancouver, draws inspiration from the urban landscape and the juxtaposition of nature, water, and mountains that surround her. She's constantly exploring new watercolour techniques while seeking to capture the essence of colour and light. Sonia is an active member of the Federation of Canadian Artists, and you can find her studio located at Portside Studios on 150 McLean Dr. in East Vancouver.
